Option #3 if your employer doesn’t offer health insurance

Get help with medication costs

Prescription medications can be very expensive, so consider these options:

  • State-based services for seniors: If you’re older than 65, with limited income and resources, you may qualify for help with drug costs and other healthcare expenses. The National Council on Aging (NCOA) provides a questionnaire that helps you identify state-based services you may qualify for.

State subsidies and discount programs: Although the NCOA Website focuses on services for seniors, many state subsidy programs are available to younger people as well. Check if your state offers a subsidy or discount medication program that you qualify for.

  • Drug manufacturer discounts: You may be eligible for a free or discounted prescription drug program through a drug manufacturer. Find out more about these programs at RxAssist or NeedyMeds.
  • Talk to your pharmacist: You may find low-cost generic drugs at many major supermarkets and pharmacies.

Option #2. Negotiate a discount on your healthcare

Option #4. Get SCHIP for your children
