Option #7 if your employer doesn’t offer health insurance
Check if your disability qualifies you for Medicare
While Medicare covers nearly everyone age 65 and older, most people younger than 65 get their health insurance from their employer, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation – unless you’re among the 45 million uninsured Americans.
If you’re younger than 65 and uninsured, you may qualify for Medicare, if:
- You have a disability that’s expected to last at least a year
- You’re expected to die as a result of your disability
To get Medicare for a disability, you’ll have to apply for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI). Then, you have to receive SSDI for 24 months before you can enroll in Medicare.
Until then, you’ll still have to find another source of health insurance.
To find out more about SSDI, call the Social Security Administration’s toll-free number at 1-800-772-1213. If you have a hearing impairment and use a TTY, call 1-800-325-0778.
To find out more about Medicare, call 1-800-633-4227
Option #6. Find out if you’re eligible for Medicaid
Option #8. Go to a local community health clinic
